Sugarcane Dance

by Summer Edward

When the sugarcane dances,
my mummy says
the wind is a wild thing.
I am a wild thing too, I say.

I go out in the yard to play
and hear my daddy singing
under the Zaboca tree.

My little sugarcane,
little sugarcane
dance in the wind for me.

So I toss my head
I sway my knees
I link up arms with my daddy’s trees
I do my sugarcane dance and sing
till the sky is rosy red.

Sugarcane, I can dance like you
when the wind is wild and the sky is blue
for my daddy says, my daddy says
that I am a wild thing too!
